Sapporo Beer

Filed under:

Sapporo is Japan’s oldest beer brand, founded in 1876, which is interesting in that it shows how young Japan is as a beer brewing nation. The original brewery itself was a Bavarian-style beer factory (it is no longer in operation).

Sapporo is one of the very few beers that is smooth, mild and easy to drink. It tastes fresh and clean unlike many beers without very much of a bitter taste. Sapporo is considered a European (not German or Bavarian) style Pilsner, having as its principal characteristics: (1) a straw/golden color; (2) a medium-body, brewed with rice, corn, wheat, or other grain or sugar adjuncts that make up part of the mash; (3) a low- to-medium hop bitterness, with low hop flavor or aroma; (4) low-levels of residual malt sweetness; and (5) an alcohol content within the range of 3.6-4.2% by weight (or 4-5% by volume).
